$1.5 billion project will increase long-term economic activity in New York City and State and enhance the quality of life for the neighboring community
A design build team led by Lendlease (US) Construction LMB Inc. and Turner Construction — with tvsdesign — was selected by Empire State Development Corporation to oversee the $1.5 billion expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.
The expansion adds state-of-the-art exhibit and meeting room spaces to attract large-scale trade shows and conventions, while enhancing the quality of life for the West Side community. The expansion will result in increased economic activity to the city and state while at the same time enhance the quality of life for the community as traffic flow is improved and pedestrian safety is increased. The expansion will reroute 20,000 event-related trucks off area streets each year, reducing the move-in and move-out process for events by 30% and freeing up an additional 20 days for new events.
“We are honored to partner with Turner and
tvsdesign in this joint venture to create a world-class,
state-of-the-art convention center for New York,” said Ralph Esposito,
President, Lendlease (US) Construction LMB Inc. I would like to take
this opportunity to thank Governor Cuomo and Commissioner Zemsky for
giving us the opportunity transform one of New York’s most important
assets into a world class destination.”
“We are excited to
partner with Lendlease, tvsdesign and all of our world-class team
members on the expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center,” said
Pat Di Filippo, Executive Vice President, Turner Construction Company.
“The construction, self-perform and technical engineering expertise of
our team gives us confidence as we undertake this monumental project. We
look forward to delivering an extraordinary, world-class facility for
the people of New York, and the many visitors who come through the
convention center every year.”
“It is hugely rewarding to help shape the future of Javits, said Robert J. Svedberg, AIA, Principal, tvsdesign. “We are thrilled to be a part of the Lend Lease Turner team, creating such an enormous opportunity for the meetings industry, local neighborhoods and the entire state of New York.
"The Javits Center is one of New York State’s greatest economic assets, and this project will turn this building into a 21st century marvel, a convention center of the caliber that New York deserves," said Howard Zemsky, President and CEO, Empire State Development, and Commissioner, New York State Department of Economic Development. "With these new, state-of-the-art facilities, we will be able to attract the world's best conferences and events and drive economic activity throughout the region for decades to come.”
Key elements and sustainable features of the expansion include:
The Javits Center is the busiest convention center in the United States, hosting events on 337 days in 2015. Located on Manhattan‘s West Side on 11th Avenue between West 34th and West 40th Streets, the six-block facility encompasses 2.1 million square feet, of which 840,000 square feet is exhibition space. It hosts trade shows, conventions, and special events that spur economic activity and job creation. In 2015, the facility hosted more than 175 events and two million visitors – ultimately supporting 17,700 jobs locally and generating an estimated 483,000 nightly hotel room reservations. In total, the Javits Center had an economic impact of $1.9 billion in 2015.
