Ngqura deepwater harbor

CityPort Elisabeth
CountrySouth Africa
Construction period2008-2012

In the space of four years, HOCHTIEF Solutions, working as technical leader of a joint venture, constructed a new deepwater harbor in the Indian Ocean near Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Completed in 2012, it was an impressive project in which 13.8 million cubic meters of earth were excavated after an area measuring 300,000 square meters had been dewatered down to 20 meters below sea level. The newly constructed breakwaters alone are nearly four kilometers long. In 2008, HOCHTIEF was awarded the follow-on contract to expand the harbor by adding two berths for a container terminal.
