In a joint venture, HOCHTIEF is constructing the Rethe Bascule Bridge in Hamburg, one of the biggest bascule bridges in Europe with a span of 104.2 meters. Work started in 2011, and is set to be completed in mid-2016. As the main road connection between the inner port area and the south, the bridge is one of the most important infrastructure projects in the port of the Hanseatic city. The bridge’s lifting mechanism will improve the flow of shipping, rail and road traffic in future. In addition, the local transshipment premises will be more accessible for the large bulk carriers as a result of the bridge’s unrestricted clearance height and greater clearance width.
