Zollverein Colliery in Essen

Zollverein Colliery in Essen, 1929-1931

With the Zollverein colliery, HOCHTIEF created a real industrial monument. The construction, inspired by the Bauhaus style was considered the “most beautiful mine in the world” even when it went into operation and for years was the largest and most modern coal mining facility. Operations ceased in 1986. Today, visitors can visit the site, which is protected as a historic monument, to immerse themselves in the history of mining and heavy industry, or visit the many art and cultural events that take place regularly there. The Zollverein colliery has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 2001.
