Taipei 101, Taipeh, Taiwan
Like a huge bamboo plant, Taipei 101 rises out of the sea of buildings of the Taiwanese metropolis. A 508-meter landmark that also stands out in terms of engineering. Its ultimate engineering feat to provide protection against earthquakes and typhoons is a 660-ton steel sphere that is suspended between the 88th and 92nd floors on steel trusses and sways like a pendulum to counteract the building’s movement caused by extreme external loads—it is the world's largest tuned mass damper.
