Aalto Theater, Essen, Germany

Organic modernism: Opened in 1988, the Aalto Theater in Essen, named after its creator Alvar Aalto, one of the most important architects of the 20th century and the inventor of "organic modernism," is home not only to the music theater, the Essen Ballet and the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra. Above all, it is an architectural landmark. Behind the asymmetrically undulating entrance wall, a high, light-flooded foyer with open visitor staircases opens up. The Aalto Music Theater is considered one of the best opera houses in the German-speaking world.
