HOCHTIEF awarded large contract for infrastructure maintenance in Scotland

The contract, estimated to be worth at a minimum of EUR 190 million, covers maintenance, repair and investment services in North Lanarkshire.

HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions GmbH has been awarded a contract by North Lanarkshire Council in Scotland estimated to be worth at a minimum EUR 190 million for maintenance and investment in road and infrastructure improvements. The contract has a minimum term of eight years and can be extended up to a maximum contract period of twelve years at the discretion of the council. Services are expected to commence in October 2024.

As the fourth largest local authority in Scotland, and positioned in between Glasgow and Edinburgh, North Lanarkshire Council, is one of 32 council areas in Scotland and covers an area comparable to Cologne.

HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions GmbH has been commissioned to take care of maintenance, inspections, fault rectification and winter services for roads, footpaths, bridges, underpasses and three reservoirs. The company will also be responsible for street lighting and traffic management systems.

HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions GmbH has been commissioned to take care of maintenance, inspections, fault rectification and winter services for roads, footpaths, bridges, underpasses and three reservoirs. The company will also be responsible for street lighting and traffic management systems.

Sustainability plays a key role in this contract which includes a plan to reduce the environmental impact. This is in line with the Scottish Government's climate reduction program and North Lanarkshire Council's net zero priorities to 2030 and beyond.

Another focus is on fair work practices and prompt payment ("Fair Work First"). HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions GmbH has committed to adopting the principles of "Fair Work First". The company will apply the fair work criteria to its own workforce and its supply chain.

The contract in figures:

  • 11.5 million square meters of carriageways,
  • 4.5 million square meters of footpaths,
  • 550 structures such as bridges, retaining walls and subways,
  • three reservoirs (Strathclyde Loch, Broadwood Loch and Forrestburn Reservoir),
  • 250 culverts and trash screens,
  • 64,000 luminaries and 2.3 million meters of street lighting cable,
  • more than 3,000 signs and 200 traffic management systems.

The overall aim of the measures is to achieve a high level of benefit, added value and long-term gains for the residents, communities and businesses of the North Lanarkshire region through long-term commitment, a focus on operational implementation, joint improvements and a high level of cooperation.
